Experience

Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai, the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, presents a unique and challenging hiking experience. As Tanzania’s sole active volcano and the third highest peak, it stands proudly in the Gregory Rift, south of Lake Natron in the Arusha region. The ascent, steep and demanding, spans 5 kilometers with a staggering 1600m elevation gain, culminating at 2,962m. Its geological intrigue lies in the rare carbonatite rock formation, borne from volcanic magma.

The trek to the summit, often starting pre-dawn, takes 6-10 hours, ensuring awe-inspiring sunrise vistas and evading scorching temperatures that can soar to 50 degrees Celsius. Acacia Bliss Tours & Safaris offers guided hikes, providing adventurers with expert insights into the region’s unique terrain and natural wonders.

Located 240 kilometers northwest of Arusha Town, Ol Doinyo Lengai overlooks Lake Natron, its base adorned with the ethereal beauty of a soda lake. This alkaline marvel serves as the exclusive breeding ground for the endangered Lesser Flamingoes, constituting 75% of the global population. The lake’s shallow depths, under three meters, and thermal mud, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, create a formidable barrier against predators, safeguarding the flamingo nests.

Lake Natron’s environs, often likened to a lunar landscape, offer intrepid explorers a journey off the beaten track. Acacia Bliss Tours & Safaris facilitates immersive experiences, enabling travelers to discover the stark beauty of the region’s desolate terrain, meandering streams, and hidden waterfalls.
