Overview

Located about 118 kilometers southwest of Arusha, Tarangire National Park spans an impressive 2,850 square kilometers. Named after the Tarangire River, the park’s lifeline during the dry season, it becomes a vital congregation point for wildlife from June to October. During this period, animals migrate from neighboring areas such as Manyara National Park to access the river, creating a spectacular wildlife viewing experience.

Tarangire National Park is renowned for its vast herds of elephants, offering one of the highest concentrations of these majestic creatures in Tanzania. Additionally, the park is home to tree-climbing lions, an unusual and fascinating sight, along with a variety of antelope species including waterbuck, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, and baboons. The diverse wildlife against the picturesque landscape makes for a truly captivating visit.

For bird enthusiasts, Tarangire is a paradise with over 500 bird species. Among the notable avian residents are the ostrich, the largest bird in the world, and the Kori Bustard, the heaviest bird capable of flight. The park also hosts 49 different types of raptors, making it a prime destination for birding safaris.

In addition to its own attractions, a visit to Tarangire can be complemented by exploring nearby sites. Lake Manyara, with its unique ecosystem and abundant wildlife, and the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its dense animal population, are both exceptional additions to any safari itinerary.
